Boating Essentials—Evenings (September and January)
Pre-Requisite: You must hold a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
The evening course proceeds weekly for 9 weeks and concludes with a review and final exam.
Who should take this course?
You are a novice or experienced boater, who wants to extend your boating skills, or refresh your knowledge and have the confidence to venture farther. This 9-week course provides this information and is taught by knowledgeable volunteers who are experienced boaters.
The course includes:
understanding the use and value of the compass,
working with and reading charts and the Global Positioning System,
studying the principles of conning and navigation,
learning to apply these principles to plotting and labelling your own charts and
developing courses and planning your own cruises.
All materials are provided with this course, including:
Plotting equipment, and other tools as well
an interactive study DVD.
The course cost is $245 for non-CPS members per student payable by cheque made out to “Midland Power and Sail Squadron”. Please bring your PCOC card for registration. For a couple who wishes to share materials, the “Couple Cost” is $380 (non-members).
The Course is held at Midland Secondary School.
Read your Boating Basics handbook prior to your first class. Pay special attention and spend time on the sections about “Canadian Aids to Navigation” and review them as necessary.
This course is extensive and requires some homework time other than classroom time. We recommend that once the schedule is revealed, that the next class topic is pre-read. In that way, once the instructor has covered that topic in class, questions can be resolved right away. We also suggest that assigned homework be completed and handed in at the next class for marking by our proctors. In this way, we can keep on top of issues immediately.
Pre-register for our next offering of this course by contacting Jim McLarty at 705-549-1334. Your course material will be ordered for you and can be picked up when you formally register. Bring your PCOC card with you to registration for inclusion in our CPS database.
